Sculptures Gorilles - 1000 Gorilles

1000 is the number of gorillas now inhabiting the forests of the Volcanoes National Park, located in northeastern Rwanda. It may not seem like a lot, and yet it is increasing very significantly thanks to preservation efforts over the past 30 years or so.

The starting point for this series of gorilla sculptures is a specific shape - a crouching gorilla resting on its forelegs - to which variations, or even mutations, to use Darwinian terminology, are applied. Variations in the play of materials and colors, and mutations in the form of plant extensions. We are therefore dealing with gorilla sculptures that evoke a hybridization between animal, plant and mineral.

The "gorilla on the stairs" was carved from a block with the main part being gray, and a small part at the plinth is yellow. Steps are dug in this part which catches the eye. We can thus visually "climb the stairs" and continue the ascent of the sculpture by hanging on to the liana ...
