The protagonists of a tragic play

Because of its resemblance to humans, the monkey has always had a special status in the animal kingdom. In the Middle Ages “bestiaries and encyclopedias made (consider) the monkey the ugliest of living beings (…) an obscene and repulsive, demonic being, who cheats and deceives, just like the devil who constantly seeks to ape God” (Michel Pastoureau, Bestiaries of the Middle Ages).

After being rehabilitated by the Darwinian revolution, the apes have today become the protagonists of a tragic play. Victims of poaching and deforestation, many species are threatened with extinction, including the great apes, our closest relatives.
